Cambridge or Michigan: the choice of the institution mainly plays out in the first degree, the Lower

It is one of the most common questions every parent has when their child approaches the first degree: Cambridge or Michigan? At The English School, the English tutoring center in Orestiada, we hear this question every year and the answer is not "one is better", but "one suits this student better".

In this guide, we clearly explain what exactly differs between the two institutions, at what point in the journey the choice is really made, and how we decide which degree each student will take, without myths and without generalizations.

Two institutions, same language levels

The first thing we need to clarify is that Cambridge and Michigan are not language levels, but certification bodies. Both issue degrees that correspond to the same levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). That is, a B2 from Cambridge and a B2 from Michigan certify the same language ability.

The correspondences for the most well-known degrees are:

  • B2 (Lower): Cambridge B2 First (FCE) and Michigan ECCE
  • C1: Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE)
  • C2 (Proficiency): Cambridge C2 Proficiency (CPE) and Michigan ECPE
The key: Because both certificates certify the same level, Greek authorities (including ASEP) give them equal recognition. A Michigan Lower is not of lesser value than a Cambridge Lower.

Attention: in Greece there are two 'Michigan'

Here is where the greatest confusion occurs, and it is worth clarifying, because most people talk about 'Michigan' as if it is one thing. In reality, there are two different families of exams named Michigan:

  • Michigan Language Assessment (University of Michigan): the classic ECCE (B2) and ECPE (C2), which are what most people mean when they say 'Michigan Lower' and 'Michigan Proficiency'.
  • Michigan State University (MSU): a separate entity with the MSU-CELC (B2) and MSU-CELP (C2) certificates.

Both correspond to the same CEFR levels and are recognized, but they are different certificates from different organizations. Therefore, when discussing 'Michigan', it is good to clarify which one you mean. In the rest of the article, when we mention Michigan, we mean the ECCE and ECPE, which are also the most widespread.

Lower
B2 First / ECCE Here is where the choice is made

The choice starts from the Lower (B2)

In practice, the question 'Cambridge or Michigan' arises for the first time at Lower, that is, at the first internationally recognized certificate. Up to that point, the student's path is common regardless of the entity. As the B2 exam approaches, we decide in which direction to prepare them.

This decision is not formal. Because the two exams have different structures, the preparation varies in the practice tests and in the areas that are emphasized. That's why we take it based on the student's profile and not based on habit or reputation.

The real differences in the examination

Beyond reputation, the substantial differences lie in four areas: in structure, in writing, in speaking, and in grading.

1. Structure and style

The Cambridge is divided into clear sections (Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening, Speaking) and places great emphasis on the correct use of the language and vocabulary. The Michigan has a more standardized and predictable format, which many students find more 'clean' in preparation.

2. Written language (Writing)

At Cambridge B2 First the candidate writes two texts (one mandatory essay and one from options), which makes the exam more demanding in writing. In the Michigan ECCE it usually requires one text, so the time pressure in writing is less.

3. Oral language (Speaking)

The Cambridge assesses speaking in pairs of candidates with two examiners and includes collaborative activities, which rewards comfort in dialogue. The Michigan follows a more predictable format of oral examination, with clear steps.

4. Grading

The Cambridge gives a score on the Cambridge English Scale and a grading of success (Grade A, B, C), meaning it shows how "high" the student passed. The Michigan assesses by unit with an overall result, with success descriptors. In both cases, the diploma you receive certifies the same level.

Which to choose depending on the student

Instead of "which is better", the more useful question is "which suits whom". Based on our experience, the following types of students benefit differently:

We choose Cambridge when the student: is strong in speaking production, enjoys dialogue and flexibility, performs well in writing, and is not stressed by the open format of the topics. The grading of Grade A/B/C is an additional motivation.
We choose Michigan when the student: performs better in a stable, predictable structure, prefers one written exam instead of two, and feels more confident when they know exactly what to expect in the exam.

In any case, the decision is not made mechanically. In our tutoring center, we assess each student's skills before suggesting an exam provider, so they enter the exam with the best chances of success. Myths and truths

Myth: "Cambridge has more prestige"

It is a widely held perception, but it does not reflect an official difference. In the eyes of Greek providers and ASEP, a C2 from Michigan and a C2 from Cambridge hold the same value. The "prestige" of Cambridge is mainly a cultural impression, not institutional superiority.

Myth: "Michigan is the easy one"

No B2 or C2 level exam is easy. Michigan simply has a more predictable structure, which helps certain students. This does not mean it requires less knowledge.

Truth: "You don't need both"

Because they certify the same level, two diplomas of the same grade do not add value. It is more logical for the student to focus on one provider and advance to a higher level, or to turn to specialized certification if needed (e.g., IELTS for studying abroad).

Recognition, ASEP, and what follows

Both providers are recognized by ASEP, as long as the degree is included in the current list. Since the list is updated, it is always worth confirming that your diploma is included before submitting a file for a job announcement. The grading counts as follows: B2 as good knowledge, C1 as very good knowledge, and C2 as excellent knowledge.

After the Lower, the natural progression is the Proficiency (C2), which gives the maximum points for language proficiency. From there, depending on the goal, the student can turn to specialized programs. Frequently Asked Questions about Cambridge and Michigan

Cambridge or Michigan, which is better?

Neither is objectively better. Both certify the same levels of the Common European Framework (B2 and C2), are equally recognized by ASEP and Greek authorities, and have lifelong validity. The difference lies in the structure and style of the exam, so one may suit the profile of a specific student better. At The English School, we choose the provider based on the skills and character of each child.

What is the main difference between Cambridge and Michigan at Lower?

At Lower (B2 level), the Cambridge B2 First requires two written texts and has an oral exam in pairs of candidates with two examiners, emphasizing speech production. The Michigan ECCE has a more standardized structure, one written text, and a more predictable oral exam format. Practically, Cambridge is considered more demanding in writing and speaking, while Michigan is more stable and predictable in preparation.

Are both degrees recognized by ASEP?

Yes. Both Cambridge degrees and Michigan ECCE and ECPE are included in the recognized language proficiency certificates of ASEP, provided that the provider and the title are mentioned in the applicable Government Gazette. B2 counts as good knowledge, C1 as very good knowledge, and C2 as excellent knowledge. Before each announcement, it is recommended to check the official list, as it is updated.

Do Cambridge and Michigan degrees expire?

No. Cambridge certificates (B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency) and Michigan (ECCE, ECPE) have lifelong validity and do not expire. Exceptions are IELTS and TOEFL type exams, which are valid for a limited time and are mainly aimed at studies or work abroad.

Which degree is easier?

There is no exam without requirements, as both providers certify the same language level. However, since Michigan has a more standardized structure and one written exam, many students find it more predictable. On the other hand, students who are strong in written and spoken production often perform better in Cambridge. The right choice depends on the student's skills, not on any absolute ease.

What is MSU (Michigan State) and how does it differ from Michigan ECCE/ECPE?

In Greece, the term Michigan is used for two different families of exams. The ECCE (B2) and ECPE (C2) come from the Michigan Language Assessment of the University of Michigan. The MSU-CELC (B2) and MSU-CELP (C2) come from Michigan State University and are a separate provider. Both correspond to the same CEFR levels and are recognized, but they are different degrees, so it is worth clarifying which one each person means.

Can a student take both degrees?

Yes, but it rarely makes sense. Since Cambridge and Michigan certify the same level and are equally recognized, two degrees of the same level do not add substantial value. It is more logical for the student to focus on one provider for B2 and continue to the next level. An exception is if a different type of certification, such as IELTS, is needed for studies abroad.
